EAST COAST CHALLENGE

2008 was our first season of racing.
We didn't get started until September, so this was a very short racing season!

Race 1: Virgin Conversion.

Run on Thistle Rd in Catonsville, MD.

On September 21, we ran our first ever MISFITS race.  Due to interruptions in the build time and work requirements, his race had been postponed one week from our regularly scheduled race of  Sept. 14 so we could have at least 2 cars running.

For our first race we decided to choose an easy course just to help get the bugs worked out.  We had tested this course numerous times in an Automobile and figured it would be slow and steady.

It turned out to be too slow!  In a few areas we had to get off and push.  As a result, the first car to the bottom was not the fastest car, but the fastest pusher.

We decided not to award a win to either driver, but instead to give each driver second place points.  This way the points will be tied going into the next race of the season on October 12.

Sorry, we didn’t get any photos or video on this event.  It was difficult enough just getting two cars to the course.

RACE 2: ILL CHESTER

Ellicott City, MD

It was a beautiful autumn morning on October 12 when we arrived at the top of the hill for our second race of 2008.  The weather was crisp and clear as the sun began to make its appearance.  The trees had started to turn and it was going to be a great day to roll into the Patapsco Valley.

Again, we only had 2 cars show up. Those who missed this run, missed a good one!  We were able to start from a steep elevated driveway that just threw us out onto the hill.  This was followed by a straight section .15 mile long that took us into the first fast left hand corner. Another short straight .1 mile long leads down to Dead Man’s Corner, a decreasing radius turn that wants to throw you out into the oncoming traffic lanes.   After making Dead Man’s Corner, the hill really gets steep for a long, fast bomb to the bottom.

Drscope was first out of the chute followed closely by Jolla’s Roller.  At the exit to Dead man’s Curve, drscope faltered and Jolla’s Roller took the lead, but Drscope was able to regroup and gained enough speed on the down hill bomb to pass Jolla’s Roller for the lead just before the finish line.

So the win and the trophy for 2008 race #2, goes to Drscope!

Race #3  ILL CHESTER 2

We had planned to run OH ELLA for race #3, but we had a shortage of course workers.  OH ELLA starts out slow for the first ¼ mile before the speeds pick up.  Traffic was unusually high and we didn’t have a chase vehicle to follow and run block behind us.  So we opted to head over and run ILL CHESTER again.

Drscope had the inside lane for the start and was able to jump out in the lead.  Jola’s Roller was close behind, but fell back.

Drscope finished first with Jola’s Roller 3.5 seconds behind.

Race #4 Escape From Hell House

Hell House, or Creepy Collage is the old St. Mary’s Seminary near our race course on Illchester Rd.  In fact our starting spot for this race is actually the entrance driveway for the St. Marys Cemetary.  While the main building has now been demolished, the property is still plenty strange.

For those interested in Hell House, you can check it out on line at:  http://hellhouse.ellicottcity.net/

Jolla’s Roller had the inside starting position for this race and jumped out to an early lead.  Drscope was able to tuck in close behind and catch a draft.  As they approached the first turn, Drscope slingshotted out and had the shortest line through the corner.  This enabled him to pull out a slight lead as the cars approached Dead Man’s Curve.

Drscope held his lead through Dead Man’s Curve and down the fastest section of the hill.  Jola’s Roller was quickly closing in as they neared the finish, but she just didn’t have what was needed to pull off a pass.
